MUSICAL ROOTS Excerpts form the September 2024 MUSICMAN Magazine Cover Story of Philip Michael Thomas - THE COMPOSER by Jeanette Stephens, El. A precocious and energetic Philip Michael Thomas was born in Columbus, Ohio on May 26, 1949. He began exploring life and his musical imagination between the tender ages of 4 thru 11, with his Stepfather, George William Liggins born January 14,1916 in Cecil, Pensilvania. Mr. Liggings was a self-taught man, car mechanic, Private Pilot and welter weight boxer from (1935-1946). He worked at Kaiser Steel in Fontana, California in 1959. He taught Philip to fix cars and the sport of boxing, Philip had his first boxing match at ten years old at the Moose Loge in Fontana, California, Mr. Liggins also taught Philip to play the piano by ear and to speak and sing in Spanish. Philip's beloved Mother, Mrs. Lula Mc Morris Thomas born September 21, 1926 in Columbus, Ohio, instilled in Philip many attributes through the power of her Mc Morris family historic education stories, editing and publishing her writings in the local newspapers. Lula loved preparing delicious meals for the family and singing Gospel and Classic Spiritual songs in the church choir with her soprano voice. "The Lords Prayer" was her favorite, she also spoke French and was Philip's first dance teacher who taught him to dance the Jitterbug. This new found freedom of artistic expression sparked a riot in Philip's heart and soul, and his budding talent coupled with tenacity and quick wit, became a winning formula that would eventually take him on the journey of a thousand seasons. ____________________________ PMT (as he is affectionately called) loves photography, studying Health & Nutrition and practicing living a vegetarian/vegan healthy lifestyle of wellness. AND the “Granddaddy of All Motivational Literature Napoleon Hill's Golden Key to success,”Think and Grow Rich”. Philip has been reading and writing poetry and children’s stories, music and lyrics since 1960. It is one of the original songs in "SACHA & the Magic Cookie Maker" and "SACHA ON BROADWAY" the Musical. ________________________ Philip Michael Thomas ~ “On a more personal note; I am so grateful to my Eternal God Omnipotent Teacher, my Beloved Heavenly Father. Sandi Morais
Writer, Director & Co-Ex-Producer In May, 1999 Sandi Morais was teaching Preschool at Sunset Christian Academy in Miami, Florida, she wanted to introduce her class to some new material. She played five of Philip's original children's songs to the children titled The Big Old Elephant & The Teeny Weeny Mouse, Magic Cookie Maker, Granddaddy Said, I Love My ABC'S & A.E.I.O.U. Sandi was amazed how quickly the children were able to remember the words to the songs. Sandi and Philip decided to turn the songs into stories for the book, and then in nine months they wrote the script and developed the Goodman family and characters into a musical play titled Sacha and the Magic Cookie Maker. The first song they composed together is titled "Love is the Magic & the Magic is YOU! The musical play was produced in Ft. Lauderdale.
